Private Lessons With Amy Ammen

Customized, convenient, efficient, and effective. Covers assessment, practice, practical training strategies (suited to your lifestyle and abilities) and, depending on the problem, total remedy.

  • In Milwaukee at Juneau Park: $ 80 for a 1/2 hour session
  • In Honolulu at Kapiolani Park: $ 80 for a 1/2 hour session
  • In Your Home: $ 195 for a one-hour session (minimum $20 travel charge outside of Milwaukee County)

Juneau Park is located on the east side of Milwaukee, just north of downtown.  Lessons are conducted on the north end of the park (which is the southeast corner of the intersection of Juneau and Prospect Avenues).

Here are some of the reasons you may chose private lessons over group class:

  • The problems you need to correct only occur at home such as house soiling, behavior around guests, separation anxiety, and over barking for example.
  • All family members can get hands on instruction.
  • Private lessons can be arranged around your schedule, days, evenings or weekends.
  • You decide exactly what you would like to cover and I I show you the fastest ways to accomplish your goals.
  • You want to ensure your new dog or puppy has a good introduction to your household and learns good habits from the start.
  • There is no extra charge for additional dogs!

Here is a brief sample of problems I commonly address: house soiling, chewing, barking, socialization skills, jumping up, separation anxiety, submissive urination or any unusual concerns.

Private training rates are the same regardless of how many dogs are involved. Training can be scheduled days, evenings or weekends. Limited travel area.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can my children (or others I invite) participate in the lesson? Whomever you’d like to include is welcome. Where appropriate, all those present and interested can participate fully.

2. How long will it take to train my dog? Your dog learns with each interaction.  When you react properly to your dog’s behavior he will learn instantly, provided you don’t take his improvement for granted.  This is simple, fun and immensely rewarding when I show you the ropes.

3. Will we use food rewards to teach my dog to behave? I use physical direction and praise. Most people use treats as a lure because it is the fastest way to entice the dog to perform a task. But be aware: there is a huge gap between following a lure and obeying a command. To bridge that gap, I demonstrate how to enforce commands by using your hands, praise and leash for guidance. This will also prove invaluable if your dog isn't interested in the treat because his tummy is full or he is distracted.

4. What type of leash is best? A 6' leather leash or biothane leash is ideal for training because it is strong versatile, and provides a non-slip grip.

5. What type of collar do you use? Whatever is best for your dog. Generally, a traditional buckle collar, the type your dog probably wears around the house, will work great. A “training collar” (such as a slip chain and prong collar) is not necessary but, in some cases, may be recommended.  After assessing your dog, your goals and your physical capability, I can offer a recommendation and help you properly fit and use the collar.

6. I’ve gotten a lot of advice and my dog is untrainable. What makes you think you can help? Some dogs require more expertise than others, and unless you’ve had my background, you could waste the entire lifespan of your dog trying to figure it out. You love your dog, and that is a great start, but love is not enough. I hope you’ll allow me to guide you to your goals in the most seamless possible way.
